Infamous NFT Hacker ‘Monkey Drainer’ Steals $200K Worth of Digital Assets

An infamous non-fungible tokens (NFTs) scammer known as Monkey Drainer has drained two digital assets belonging to former Ledger security expert EojJim.

In a recent tweet, EojJim said he signed a token approval transaction on a phishing site and lost two NounsDao NFTs. The user purchased the NFTs for a total of 160 ETH, which is currently around $200k.

“First of all, I never thought I would get phished I used to always be dumbfounded at people falling for such obvious scams but hey it happened to me now and it sucks Was also impacted decently by FTX last week for my trading balance. So a terrible couple of weeks for me,” the former security expert said.

He added that the post was looking for punk owners for a custom collaboration with digital artist Dimitri Likissas and Christie’s. “They took a real artist+his work and made a phish out of it. Their post was well made w/legit punk accounts that I knew cheering on the collab I fell for it hook line and sinker,” he added.

Notably, the people calling it out as a scam had their replies hidden by the scammer. “Luckily they did not get my crypto punk and other NFTs as the only things in my account that had approvals on were Nouns and wETH,” EojJim said.

According to Web3 sleuth ZachXBT and Twitter community member @_solimander, the entity behind the hack appears to be Monkey Drainer.

This person or group has been going after Bored Apes in recent times. EojJim is “mentally writing them off as 0,” but he has also said that he will “put a bounty if anything can be retrieved.” He even asked if anyone can put him in touch with the NFT thief Monkey Drainer to “negotiate.”

In late October, it was revealed that Monkey Drainer had drained approximately 700 ETH ($1 million) worth of crypto and NFTs over 24 hours.

The prominent on-chain sleuth known as ZachXBT first broke the news, revealing that the scammer used phishing to drain user funds. He also managed to track and highlight the activity of the hacker.

“Over the past 24 hrs ~700 ETH ($1m) has been stolen by the phishing scammer known as Monkey Drainer. They recently surpassed 7300 transactions from their drainer wallet after being around for only a few months,” the pseudonymous researcher said at the time.
